Stage Design Guidelines.

 

  1. The object is to make it fun – not trip up the shooters.
  2. Normally we do six stages – when doing “fastest gun,” “22 shooting gallery,” “stage at shotgun range” make it a side event and the match is 5 stages.  Many shooters are not shotgun shooters. We do not recommend mixing main match stages with CAS side match or other types of shooting.    
  3. It is fair if ever shooter has to do the same thing.
  4. Use two pistols, the rifle and shotgun on each stage. 10 pistol,  8 to 10 rifle, and 4 to six shotgun.  We permit shotgun from hip.  However if you do this have it apply to first shot on each popper.  Make ups can be aimed.
  5. Try to balance the time so all stages run about 60 seconds for an average shooter. This will mean it will run from 30 seconds to about 100 seconds.
  6. There are two basic types of stages – Run & Gun – Stand and Shoot.
  7. Run & Gun – stages with stage business take longer. Stand & Shoot are quicker. Do long R&G in Mornings – S&S  stages after lunch and use 8 or 9 rifle shots.  In winter months this is important so we do not run out of daylight.
  8. Sweeps – targets are numbered from left to right
    1. Sweep from left – 1,2,3,4,5 – 1,2,3,4,5
    2. Sweep from right 5,4,3,2,1 -  5,4,3,2,1
    3. Nevada sweep  1,2,3,2,1 or 1,2,3,4,5,4,3,2,1 (total 9)
    4. Lawrence Welk Sweep -  1, 22,333,4444
    5. Double tap 11,22,33,44
    6. ??????    2, 1,2,3,2
    7. engage each target at least once. ( Expect 1, 2, 333)
  9. Stages that require resetting – the deputy, Texas star, pop throwers etc.  take more time and are limited to 50 yard range.
  10. On 50 you can go front to back and side to side.  On 100 & 200 you can only go side to side
  11. Have “lines and stage business ”  off the clock.  Saying the line or doing the stage business tells the RO to start the timer. (Rope the steer – when the rope is on the steer you start the timer. )
  12. Use the horse on the 200 – ease of set up.  Use the extra pistol holster for cross draws.  You start on the horse for safety reasons. 
  13. Keep in mind the second stage on each range when you are designing stages for each range and try to minimize steel movement at lunch time.
  14. Occasion speed dumps are fun. 
  15. The closer the target the more the fast shooters will miss. 
  16. Gunfighter at PSC means if pistols are back to back you must have both out at same time.  If they are not back to back then you shoot it double dualist.  I recommend putting this info at top so all GF shoot it the same way.
  17. Shotgun poppers must go down – permit make ups.  
  18. Remember basically all stages are 10, 10 & 4. It is the stage business that makes them memorable.  A bit of strange is fun – a long shot for a bonus, Texas Star, Throwing pop cans,  etc make it more interesting.   Lines, stage business also make stages interesting.
